Boosting Brain Power from Medicinal Mushrooms
We’ve known for many years the superior health advantages of the extracts of medicinal mushrooms. Their multi-actions and health benefits have been documented and used in traditional medicine in Asian countries for centuries.
With increasing interest in this area an exciting pre-clinical trial at the University of Queensland was published in February 2023 conducted by Professor Frederic Meunier from the Queensland Brain Institute.
Researchers identified new active compounds from the mushroom, Hericium erinaceus commonly known as Lions Mane. Researchers found that lion's mane mushroom extracts improved brain cell growth and memory, particularly short-term memory.
The laboratory tests measured the neurotrophic effects of isolated from certain compounds from Hericium erinaceus on cultured brain cells, and surprisingly found active compounds of lion’s mane promoted neuron projections, extending and connecting to other neurons.
This important research is helping identify the various mechanisms of lion’s mane mushroom compounds and their effects on brain function, particularly memory and its applications in Alzheimer’s disease.
